A new hand gesture recognition -related project launched

GSoC2012_300x200

A new project launching of hand gesture recognition in gstreamer – as the proposal to developing a gstreamer plugin for accurate hand gesture recognition in multimedia streams has been accepted successfully, more practical activities are going to start soon. The expected results of this project is to develop a gstreamer plugin that is capable to support hand gesture index in video streams, also, recognising real time hand gestures in live video stream, thus enabling developers to build up advanced applications such like video playing control using fingers.

    Nice! I have been playing with ways to improve the user interaction of my application. The app is designed to be used at a distance on a large screen (10 ft user interface). Currently, I am playing with a gstreamer plugin for pocket sphinx which allows me to use voice commands in my application. Hand gestures could be another avenue of interest. What sort of detector would you use to view the gestures? Is there something available for a reasonable price?Good luck with your work.

      @Brian
      if the application screen is 10 ft away from the users, except voice command-based manipulations, using limbs as natural interaction ways may also be a good option. the hand gesture i am going to implement in this google summer of code project is aiming at detecting and recognising hand gestures which are like finger numbers and palm shapes. this requires more precise recognitions than limb gesture recognition – is there any plugin in gstreamer that supports natural human body gesture recognition?
      about the price, the project is going to produce a gstreamer plugin which is open for public use under certain licenses – it is open source.
      lastly thanks for your comment.
