Hi, Your website is really helpful for my project. Yet I need advice from you. I’ve tried to run your “hand detection and recognition.cpp” code then i got an error msg like this “Unhandled exception at 0x772615ee in HandDetect.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0×00000000.”

hi andol im a computer science student in philippines and im new in OPENCV ive downloaded a code which is fully functional but my concern is that the camshift algorithm is not quite good because it wont track sa skin contour of the person when there’s somethings that is bright color, even if the person is not visible in the camera the camshift still detecting the shade or the light of which the camshift seen. can u help… pls i need it in my thesis project. glad if u will help

the ‘access violation’ might be caused by image releasing which tries to release unexisted image; also, checking the libhighgui200.dll is necessary due to different versions of openCV may cause conflicts of dll file use.

Hi Andol,
I tried debugging your code hsv.cpp and I’ve been facing with an error like “Unhandled exception at 0x100d13e0 in Hand.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0xffffffff” and it has had two options for me to choose (whether Break or Continue). When I choose Break,The program stops debugging immediately. But if I choose Continue, nothing happens. And when I look at The Call Stack Window, I see something like: libhighgui200.dll!100d13e0()( [Frames below may be incorrect and/or missing, no symbols loaded for libhighgui200.dll] ). I cannot get rid of that kind of trouble.
Could you please help.

@Manav the hsv codes were used under specific light environments, which considered the skin colours and the environments lights. Therefore if the code is used in other environments, adjustments of some parameters are needed, due to the function is based on skin detection. that means, you can use segmentation functions in the orders that you can get the best results.

I used your hsv.cpp code. It didn’t run in Visual Studio 2008, surprisingly because a inbuilt function (addhistogram_ something) part of cvFindContours is not defined. Well it ran in Visual Studio 2010, but the recognition accuracy was really poor. What could be the reason ? How powerful is the lens of ur camera etc.

First Heartiest Congratulations on an excellent informative blog. Actually I am working on a finger mouse project. I need to have a Hand gesture recognition system which recognises the following three gestures, with complex background(Camera 1.3 MegaPixel, so a lot of noise is involved). 1)Fist 2) Index Finger Raised 3. Open Palm i.e. all fingers open.
Can u help me with any of your codes which recognises the three with reasonable accuracy in various backgrounds and lighting conditions. Thanks.

@Kitty, this problem was caused by the application trying to read a empty variable not existing -might be deleted or undefined. to solve this, you can delete lines like this:
cvReleaseCapture( &capture);
cvDestroyAllWindows();
but please notice the memory leaking caused by this operation.

@Peter If two hands are expected to be detected, then probably it needs to extract two hands' contours first, then based on the contours, judging what the gestures are. I did not do such project before, but anyway, thought the key thing was to detect two hands' contours respectively. @Peter This project was built based on openCV 1.2, as i have tried before, running this project under openCV 2.0 may cause some issues such like problems you mentioned above. My suggestion is, to check relevant functions and replace them with those used in openCV 2.0.

@Macthiennhi The unresolved external symbol error comes from two reasons: 1) the referred functions or variables not exist or incorrect use. 2) using the different versions of library like openCV 1.2 and openCV 2.0. Deleting the function of cvDestroyWindows or check the project link configurations, this may help.

welcome back buddy, actually contours need to be extracted through cvFindContours(), this can be referred in the source codes in this post, then according to certain conditions to pick up hand contours such like the areas and positions, and after that applying convexity detections or similar functions to analyse the gesture of the contours.

are they useful to detect the contour about the hand effectively or should i try something else.

The theory is explained as this: first, threshold of image to make the image white and black; second, filtering noises in previous image and smooth the edges; third capturing the contours of objects shown in the image; forth, using convexity detection to recognise hand gestures. Hope this helps.

@John Jin This is caused by a function which tries to read a variable from memory which is actually empty or has been cleared already. So the ‘memory access violation’ happens, to solve it, check any variable which may generate empty memory and memory addresses.

@Sarang It is too much to answer your question, my suggestion is, reading some source codes in examples as the beginning of hand detection. Because once you can understand how a program is done in some ways, afterward you can make your own project soon, whatever the detecting object is.

@Naj about openCV output, there are functions in openCV library to out put the texts, images, and even writing the results into a .txt file. Check the openCV manual this will be found easily.

Sir..i see..ok sir.. thanks for the great info.. ohh..btw sir, just another question, for example. ill use sign language letter “B”, how will i make an output of it. for example, an output text “B” on a textbox.

@Naj Your chosen method to detect signs is understood as Haar Classifier which requires huge trainings with both positive images and negative images. You need to use these sample images to train your system, such like 100 sample images with the letter B and another 100 images without the sign B. Hope this helps.

,the problem is i dont know how will i recognize the different sign languages, for example i use sign language letter “B”, how will i recognize it as letter B or how will i use the algorithm to recognize the sign language letter as “B”. thank you sir.:) thanks for repyling too:)

@Sarang openCV is a open library for computer vision and Matlab is an application environment such like Visual studio for algorithm designs and validations, that means, openCV can be used in Matlab as long as including relevant files, also, openCV can be used in Eclipse and other development environments.To recognise accurate hand gestures, in my opinion, first of all you should extract every hand gesture, and then give each detected gesture a trigger of certain operations.
